Attic Insulation or Air-Sealing?

by | Sep 11, 2018 | Comfort |

Chill in the air! Shorter days! The first cold days of late Autumn send homeowners scurrying to button up before Winter. Direct sellers of attic insulation assure us that attic insulation is a simple, DIY project which saves a homeowner considerable cash.

Not so! says EnergyStar.gov. In fact, it rates attic retrofit as a DIFFICULT project, better left to professionals?  Why?

Rather simple. The walls, ceilings, and floors of your home make up what is called the building envelope, sometimes called the thermal envelope. Holes in this critical boundary dramatically reduce the effectivenesss of insulation.

The value of insulation is referred to as R-value.  The higher the R-value the more effective.

However, R-value assumes there is no air infiltration into a space.  It assumes adequate air-sealing.  Where there are holes in the thermal envelope, the R-value decreases dramatically!

Insulating your home without repairing the thermal envelope and air-sealing the boundary is like wearing a heavy coat which is full of holes.  The coat had the potential to keep you warm, but its holes reduced its effectiveness.  You wouldn’t wear a coat full of holes.  Don’t live in a house full of holes, either.

Do You Have Any of the Following in Your Home?

  • Knee/half walls
  • Soffits
  • Trey ceilings
  • Recessed Lighting
  • Dormer windows

If so, it’s likely you have breeches in your home’s thermal envelope.

Moreover, you likely don’t see the wiring holes, flue/duct chaseways, and plumbing/pipe openings. When it comes to comfort, what you don’t see is what can hurt you…and your wallet.

When 21% of the energy consumption nationwide is devoted to home comfort systems, you don’t want to be left heating your attic, crawl space, backyard, and front porch.

What are the Symptoms of Poor Air-Sealing?

  • Drafty rooms
  • Uneven temperatures from one part of the house to another
  • High utility bills
  • Ice dams in winter
  • Rapid dust build-up on surfaces in your home.

Today’s modern homeowner chooses from a variety of air-sealing options.  Affordably priced, and professionally designed through the use of infrared and building performance technology, NEVER insulate your attic… at least until you talk to Lifestyle Comfort Solutions about air-sealing.
